Climate Scientist — Risk & Extreme Events
Dr. Abayomi A. Abatan is a climate scientist with more than 30 years of experience in climate change and variability, climate risk assessment, extreme weather and climate events, data analytics, and forecasting.
He has a proven track record of applying advanced analytical methods to address complex scientific and business challenges, leveraging large datasets to generate actionable insights and delivering value to stakeholders.
His research focuses on using in-situ observations and climate models to investigate the impacts of extreme weather events, including droughts and heatwaves, on society and the environment, while effectively communicating climate-related risks.
His work has been published in leading international peer-reviewed journals, including, International Journal of Climatology, Frontiers, Theoretical and Applied Climatology, Climate Dynamics, Climatic Change, Journey of Hydrometeorology, and Regional Environmental Change.
Dr. Abatan earned a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) degree in Meteorology from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria, and a Ph.D in Atmospheric Sciene and Meteorology from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, USA. He subsequently completed postdoctoral research appointments at the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom, and the University of Exeter in Exeter, United Kingdom.
