About Biochemistry
What is life? The fundamental answer to this question is provided by Biochemistry, a discipline that explains the molecular basis of life. With the knowledge of Biochemistry, one gains an understanding of how chemical compounds come together to form living organisms. Biochemistry interfaces with the physical sciences, that deal with how matter is organised, and the life sciences, that are concerned with the properties and behaviour of living things. The knowledge of Biochemistry is vital for understanding and dealing with critical issues such as growing population and food security, human health and diseases, biotechnology, environmental conservation and sustainable living. The Department of Physical and Chemical Sciences offers a four-year programme leading to the award of a bachelor of science honours (B.Sc) degree in Biochemistry. The programme is designed to train prospective students in various aspects such as enzymology, protein science, lipids, nutrition, toxicology and others in ambient environment, powered by committed staff, modern learning systems and excellent teaching &laboratory facilities. Studying Biochemistry at our Department promises to be an exciting experience, with brighter prospects for our graduates to find job placements in the industry (i.e. pharmaceutical, food & beverages, biotech and agro allied companies), health sector (i.e. hospitals, medical centres), higher institutions (i.e. universities, research institutes), government agencies, etc or as entrepreneurs.
Philosophy
Biochemistry is an important scientific discipline of broad applications. The adopted instructional and training approach to Biochemistry at Elizade University is focused on teaching the subject as a basic science and research discipline. Also, in conformity to current trends and global standards, consideration was given to the modern content- and outcome-centered approach in designing the curriculum. The programme therefore provides a robust background in theory and experimental aspects of biochemistry, and is sufficiently flexible to develop the requisite skills of prospective students and accommodate their postgraduation aspirations to pursue any future interests in other fields such as medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering, biotechnology, molecular biology or in the industry and research institutions. For these reasons, students are expected to broaden their knowledge of biochemistry by subscribing to courses in natural sciences, mathematics, humanities and social sciences as part of graduation requirements. This will enhance the production of quality graduates who are critically inclined, analytically minded, competitive, technologically competent, employable or self-reliant, able to contribute to national productivity and socioeconomic development. The ultimate aim of the biochemistry programme therefore is: To build capacity of students with new, relevant, adequate knowledge and high level skills essential for engaging in advanced research and technological innovations toward attaining self-reliance, optimal contribution to national economic productivity/performance and sustainable development.
Aim and Objective
i) Provide a sound and all-round education and training in biochemistry and its applications ii) Develop creative minds capable of engaging in intelligent enquiry, informed reasoning and balanced judgment; iii) Make students aware of the relevance of biochemistry to life and sustainable living on earth. iv) Expose students to the latest scientific investigation procedures and best practices through the integration of both theoretical and experimental training, using the modern equipment and facilities. v) Develop individuals with the right attitude, insight, initiative, transferable skills, objectivity and integrity in the application of science to solving societal problems. vi) Provide appropriate courses for students from other departments, who require a working knowledge of biochemistry
