About B.Sc Accounting

The Accounting Programme of the Department of Accounting and Finance of Elizade University is an Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Mutual Cooperative Agreement with Tertiary Institutions (MCATI) and ACCA accredited department /programme and an Institutional Member of The Nigerian Accounting Association (NAA). The ICAN MCATI accreditation gives our Accounting Graduates the priviledge to write final ICAN examination (Professional Level) to qualify as Chartered Accountants, while the ACCA accreditation gives our Accounting Students priviledge to get exemptions on subject by subject basis, based on their level, starting from 200 Level. Besides, the Accounting programme was accredited by Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment (CISI) United Kingdom for Students that wish to pursue a career in the Financial Industry to gain requsite knowledge and skill through CISI certificate examination while under-going their degree programme. The Department is unique and its programme takes care of current happenings and events in the field of Accounting profession globally. 

 

 

Apart from the cream of qualified Lecturers in the Department, our teaching facilities such as Projectors, Electronic Marker Board and i-Learn Facilities which enables Students to access recorded lectures after classes simplify the challenges that other contemporary Universities are battling with. Our Accounting and Finance Laboratory is stocked with Accounting Tools used in real business environment including Computers and Modern Accounting and Statistical Softwares provides students with real world technical skills of Accounting. 

 

 

Furthermore, our Students are prepared to write both Academic and Professional Examinations. Students are trained to have better knowledge and understanding of Contemporary Issues in Accounting including Forensic Accounting, International Accounting, Financial Entrepreneurship and Corporate Governance, Accounting Ethics and Value, Oil and Gas Accounting, Social and Environmental Accounting, Integrated Reporting etc. Students interested in taking the ACCA examinations while undergoing their undergraduate programmes have the opportunity to do so as ACCA tuition is provided on campus with the help of TNSS Associate, an accredited ACCA tuition provider. 

 

 

There have been four different headships of the Department since inception to date. Dr. E. O. Adeleye was the head of the Department from 30th February 2013 till 30th January 2015 while Prof. E. Eragbhe was the head of the Department from 12th March 2015 to 30th August 2017. The headship of the Department was taken over from Prof. E. Eragbhe by Dr. F. Aribaba on 1st September 2017 to 31st October 2018. Presently, Dr. B. M. Ololade is the head of the Department. He assumed the headship of the Department on 1st November 2018. The Department has ten (10) Academic Staff, one Administrative Secretary and one Accounting Laboratory Technologist currently. Meanwhile one (1) full-time Academic Staff and (4) adjunct Academic Staff had left the service of the Department. Out of the five (5) Academic Staff that had left the service of the Department, four (4) are male and one (1) is female.

 

 

Finally, the Department offers to Students, Accounting Training that enables them to think and act strategically and professionally for careers in Accounting Firms, Commercial and Industrial Businesses, Government Agencies, Non-Profit Making Institutions and other Organisations locally and internationally. Also, through several courses embedded on entrepreneurship in the programme, entrepreneurial development is encouraged among the Accounting Students. 

 


Philosophy

The general philosophy of the Accounting Programme is to provide the Students with quality education and training that will develop the mind, impart both theoretical and practical knowledge on the individual Student, develop self-confidence, help to be innovative and self-reliant in the field of Accounting.


Aim and Objective

The major objectives of a Bachelor’s degree programme in Accounting are to: 

  1.  produce high level accounting personnel that can contribute to the development of accounting practice through researches and publications, 
  2.  provide basic knowledge and skills needed for the understanding and analysis of problems relating to accounting in the management of industrial, commercial, public and other human organizations, 
  3.  equip students with knowledge and skills of decision making; especially the analytical skills needed for recognizing, defining and solving problems, 
  4. develop in students, leadership and interpersonal relations skills in accounting/ management, and 
  5. provide training aimed at improving and upgrading the existing and potential manpower needed for national development.

Admission Requirements

A. Admission Requirements for the Four-Year Programme Candidates for admission into the four-year degree programme in Accounting should:

  •  Possess the Senior Secondary School Certificate, General Certificate of Education, by WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or their equivalents with at least five credit passes, at not more than two sittings including Mathematics, English Language and Economics. There are no waivers for credit passes in any of these subjects.
  • In addition, candidates must have acceptable passes in UTME. The UTME subjects must be in the following: English, Mathematics, Economics; Plus any other Social Science subject. B. Admission Requirements for the Three-Year Programme (Direct Entry) Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five Credits, in GCE, SSCE by WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or their equivalents, of which at least two shall be at Advanced Level, provided that such passes are not counted at both levels of the examination. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and Economics are required. OR Candidates must possess five Credits which must include English Language, Mathematics and Economics in GCE, SSCE by WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or their equivalents; at most two sittings, and Ordinary National Diploma (O.N.D) at least with upper credit in Accounting, and other related disciplines from approved Nigerian Polytechnics. OR Candidates with final certificate of professional bodies such as Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA), ACCA, ANAN etc in addition to five credits passes which must include English Language, Mathematics, Economics, not more than two sittings.
