B. MLS. Medical Laboratory Science Programme

About B. MLS. Medical Laboratory Science

Medical laboratory science is a profession which provides a broad based fundamental scientific knowledge of medical laboratories and their uses. The graduates are equipped to meet the challenges of modern scientific knowledge in Health Care and enables them proceed to further training. Students of this discipline at this level are exposed to application of Medical Laboratory Science in the areas of Medicine, Pharmaceutical industries, utility Department (e.g. water cooperation), Research institutes, Food industries as well as Diagnostic kit/ Machine production.

The courses are designed to expose the student to core areas like Clinical Chemistry, Haematology and Blood Group Serology, Histopathology and Cytology, Medical Microbiology, Immunology as well as Instrumentation, Laboratory Management and Entrepreneur skills. Students are required to broaden their knowledge in the core areas by taking ancillary courses in chemistry, mathematics, statistics, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and biology. They are also expected to understand the working of laboratory instruments and existing techniques and to modify them where possible. The practical aspect of the programmes prepares the students always to think in terms of diagnostic criteria in the assessment and evaluation of clinical samples. The students so trained will fit into any diagnostic laboratory in hospitals, research institutes and industries, food laboratories and other allied field or they may be self-employed.

On the successful completion of the five years Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences Programmes and one year internship, preceding participation in the NYSC programme, graduates are registered as Associates members of the Medical Laboratory Sciences Council of Nigeria.

Philosophy

The Medical Laboratory Sciences (BMLS) department is projected to:

  1. Offer outstanding academic and professional knowledge that will produce quality Medical Laboratory Scientists capable of working in any environment.
  2. Produce students with expertise to produce biological and diagnostic reagents, fabricate or repair new equipment or even modify existing technologies and refine old techniques or synthesize new diagnostic procedures.
  3. Produce medical laboratory scientists with ample management skills to lead, employ others, train and partake in general practice of laboratory sciences.

Aim and Objective

The main objectives of BMLS honours degree programmes in Medical Laboratory Sciences are to:

  1. offer courses and related studies to undergraduate students as may be approved by the Senate of the University and Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria leading to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS);
  2. instil in students intellectual and satisfying learning experience that will enable them fill the manpower needs of the country in Medical Laboratory Science;
  3. provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of medical laboratory knowledge and practical skills; performing effectively in clinical diagnostic services, academics and quality assurance; and function independently or in collaboration with other members of the health team in the care of individuals and groups at all levels of health care;
  4. develop in students, the ability to apply their medical laboratory knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in laboratory medicine;
  5. empower graduates of Medical Laboratory Sciences with skills that will enable them engage in income yielding ventures.

Admission Requirements

Candidate seeking enrolment into the BMLS programme should possess the following minimum entry qualification(s):

  1.  UTME Admission

Candidates should possess at least five credits at ordinary level West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE) or its equivalent (NECO, NABTEC, SSCE, GCE), maximum at two sittings, to qualify for consideration for admission. The subject includes: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics and English Languages. The students must also have performed well in joint matriculation board examination (UME/JAMB).

  1. Direct Entry Admission

The candidate should possess, in addition to the requirements in “a” above, one of the following:

  1. Pass in general certificate of education or at advanced level in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Zoology) in addition to (a) above.
  2. Graduates of first degree in related sciences or its equivalent in addition to (a) above (remedial result is not accepted). First degree from approved university, OND or HND certificate.
  3. Candidates who are holders of Medical Laboratory Technicians certificate from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and who have relevant qualifications as specified in 1 above may be considered for direct entry.
  4. Transfer students. Candidates can transfer from other department in the college of Medicine and Health Sciences with CGPA of not less 3.50 without carryover courses.

Note: No differed entry requirement

Inter and Intra University transfer

The department has the prerogative for discretionary transfer. The factors to be considered are;

  1. Senior Secondary School Certificate with credit in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English Language.
  2. Relevant pass in the joint Matriculation Examination (UTME)
  3. A good cumulative grade point (CGPA) not less than 3.5 with no outstanding courses still outstanding.
  4. Candidates from other university should have taken and passed relevant courses from BMLS in their respective Universities in addition to the above requirement (a-c)
  5. Candidate who has been asked to withdraw from the other faculty and/or university shall not be considered for admission to the department
  6. Transfer candidate have to satisfy the interview panel of the department and shall be limited in number to not more than 5% of the admission quota.
  7. Any candidate wishing to change to the department from a relevant department/ faculty must have spent at least [1] academic session in the university.

NOTES: Students are required to register with the Medical Laboratory Sciences Council of Nigeria as a student member from 300 Level. Any student found unqualified shall withdraw from the programme forthwith.
